Trailer Check: Cinderella (2015)

After Alice in Wonderland (2010) and Maleficent (2014), Walt Disney is set on releasing another beloved animated classic with real actors and actresses. The first trailer was released about two weeks ago and became an instant hit. With 4.2 million people watching on YouTube and another 33 million on Facebook, it gained the most views ever for a Disney movie trailer, excluding releases of the Marvel franchise. But does the trailer really have the potential to draw masses of people to the cinema?

Indeed, it does. As a huge fan of the original Disney version, I'm glad that many of its elements have made it into the upcoming film: pumpkins, mice, glass-slippers and all. Besides, the trailer convinces with an utterly marvellous set design, breathtaking costumes and an engaging musical score.

It is also nice to see that, apparently, Cinderella's biological mother and Prince Charming are getting more of a profile here than in the animated version. According to imdb, he still doesn't have a real name but, hey, at least he's got a few more lines. That's progress. But seriously, I'd love to see Cinderella's connection to her real mum as well as her relationship with the Prince to be explored further.

Another strong point certainly is the cast. I mean, Cate Blanchett as the Wicked Stepmother and Helena Bonham Carter as the Fairy Godmother? Consider my day made. Downton Abbey's Lily James seems like a perfect fit for the title role and Game of Thrones' charming Richard Madden should make for a charming Prince Charming. Further cast members include Hayley Atwell, Holliday Grainger, Sophie McShera, Derek Jacobi, Ben Chaplin and Stellan Skarsgård. Direction by Kenneth Branagh.

Release: March 2015
